Draw with Me – Session 6

In the final session of the course we’ll work with what we’ve learnt so far to make a drawing of an interior setting. You can choose to make your own arrangement of furniture and objects or work with my reference photos. Maybe you have a favourite spot with a chair in front of a window that you’d like to draw? Or perhaps you have a collection of objects on a mantelpiece that you find inspiring? Even the array of plates, cutlery and napkins on a dining table after dinner could be an exciting subject to draw!

This is a long demonstration video and I’d recommend tackling it over several sessions. Remember, there’s no rush with this drawing and it’s fine to work on it over several days if that suits you. I have listed time points for key stages in the lesson so that you can fast forward through to the bit you need today.

Introduction – 0:00
Setting out the drawing – 20:15
Adding tone to the chair – 54:27
Adding tone to the fabric – 1:37:20
Adding tone to the plant – 2:13:28
Adding tone to the cup, books and box 2:47:06

Approximate run time: 3 hours 22 minutes

Presenter: Laura Kemshall

Draw with Me – Session 5

In this session we’ll work with coloured pencils. Using just yellow, red and blue we’ll make a study of a floral subject focussing on how we can layer and colour mix with those pencils. Work onto your sketchbook page or drawing paper, or if you prefer to use toned paper you can add a white pencil for those highlights and pale areas. Don’t forget, if you prefer to grid for accuracy of your initial drawing that’s fine, just keep that grid nice and light and rub it out before you begin to add layers of colour.

Draw with Me – Session 4

In this session we’ll look at drawing contrasting textures – something very shiny, the cutlery or scissors, and something softer such as a tea towel or piece of folded fabric. We’ll also explore using a toned background to help us with our values and experiment with introducing a white pencil to achieve lighter values and highlights.

Draw with Me – Session 3

In this session we’re going to experiment with making arrangements of several objects to create a pleasing composition. Working from this arrangement direct from life, or from photographs we’ll make a drawing. It’ll be an opportunity to work on your skills of comparing relative proportions and using negative space to help make an accurate drawing. Don’t forget, you can also use a grid if you found that helpful last time.

Approximate run time: 1 hours 21 minutes

Presenter: Laura Kemshall

In this lesson we'll work creating an arrangement of several objects in a single composition then we'll make a drawing.

Draw with Me – Session 2

In this session we’re going to use a grid to help us draw accurately with confidence. Using a grid isn’t for everyone, but it can be a useful device if you’re drawing something with tricky proportions or quite a complicated subject. The grid will help you check your observational skills. I’ll also show you how the grid can be used to scale up or down your drawings very easily and effectively.

Approximate run time: 2 hours 21 minutes

Presenter: Laura Kemshall

In this lesson we'll look at how using a grid can help with confidently making an accurate drawing of a complicated subject and also how it can be used to explore scale in your work.
