This workshop has five videos.
Art Diary Challenge – Introduction
In this first video Linda talks about the concept of keeping a visual record of events over a set period of time. She shares a few basic facts about the choice of materials you’ll need to work along with her as you make your own art diary. On a practical note Linda begins her sketchbook by creating a title page using ransom note lettering. No need to be nervous if all this seems new to you – Linda explains everything she does in detail.
Run time: 17 minutes
Presenter: Linda Kemshall
Art Diary Challenge – Next Steps
In the second video of this collection Linda takes inspiration from a plant in her garden and creates lovely images using rubbings. No need to be able to draw if you use this method! You’ll discover how to make simple rubbing plates to transfer shapes direct to the sketchbook page and how to develop the images with additional colour. You’ll see exactly how Linda uses the same technique on cotton fabric too. Your art diary can have lots of fabric and stitch as well as art techniques!
Run time: 18 minutes
Art Diary Challenge – The first month.
In this video you’ll discover how Linda has been inspired by both grand events and local happenings. She has used a wide range of mediums and techniques including mono print, collagraph, painting and printing. She walks through the pages completed so far and shares her way of creating pages that layer and combine imagery with text.
Run time: 43 minutes
Art Diary Challenge – Two months In.
This video includes examples of monoprinting and how the prints can be taken further with additional colour and detail. It’s harvest time in the garden and ripe apples and pears provide inspiration for lovely drawings and prints. Linda alters the dimensions and proportions of her sketchbook and she explains the value of making photocopies of existing images to extend your creative possibilities.
Run time: 20 minutes
Art Diary Challenge – The final instalment.
In Linda’s diary it’s wintertime now. Bare trees uprooted and broken provide graphic shapes for pen drawings that illustrate the after effects of Storm Barney. A big bowl of windfall apples is a perfect subject for a pencil drawing made in front of a cosy fireside. Linda explains how a point of difference draws the viewers’ attention and creates focus within a composition. Old and faded family photographs stir up thoughts and memories and provide much food for thought about past and future work. The passing of time has been a significant aspect of this project. It began as a challenge to record a three month period but it ends as something far more ambitious!
